Black Friday (and/or Cyber Monday) may be the best days in the whole year to buy a deluxe memory foam mattress… or anything else for that matter. The discounts are deeper than at any other time. Retailers are frantic about moving merchandise, so frantic that they might even be willing to haggle over already slashed prices. It’s a shopping bonanza! Of course, along with the frenzy of consumerism comes sleep’s number one nemesis: anxiety. Americans are already an anxious people. According to the World Health Organization, we’re the most anxious population of any country on Earth. It’s no secret that anxiety is dangerous—in addition to affecting sleep (or perhaps because it does), anxiety can lead to heart disease, diabetes, obesity, and depression. And the holidays are notoriously high-anxiety times already. So, before Black Friday washes over you in all its sale-y glory, protect your nerves with these five easy tips.

Make a List and Check it Twice

It’s incredibly easy to get overwhelmed whilst roaming the teeming aisles. People can be truly unpleasant on big shopping days too, which makes perusing goods all the more stressful. Avoid the panic by thinking through your purchases before you leave the house. If you’re buying gifts, try to come up with two or three possibilities in case your first choice isn’t available.

It’s inevitable: you won’t find everything you want on Black Friday. For one thing, unless you hit the stores early, a lot of merchandise may be sold out. For another, there’s no guarantee a store will carry the same items during the holidays they carry during the rest of the year. So, the more flexible and laid back you can be, the happier you’ll be. Remember, come Monday you can always shop online. This year retailers are paying special attention to mobile shopping too so you don’t even have to be at home to buy your gifts.

Think of Black Friday as an athletic event and prepare by getting a good night’s sleep. The more well rested you are, the more resilient you’ll be to stress and anxiety.
