While these options are very important and crucial to the sleeping cycle, there is another option that might get overlooked. This option is plant therapy. It may sound a little strange, but there are certain plants out there that can actually help a person sleep better when placed in their bedroom at night. There are many types of plants that have been found to have a relaxing effect on people’s sleep patterns.

Jumping for Jasmine

According to a study by the Wheeling Jesuit University, Jasmine has a positive effect on the quality of sleep one gets, decreasing anxiety and improving the attitude one has after waking up. The smell of Jasmine doesn’t make you sleep more, instead it makes your sleep time count for more. You could consider it ‘high quality’ sleep with less moving and disturbance. In addition, studying while smelling Jasmine increased alertness and performance on cognitive tests.

Giddy for Gardenia

The scent of Gardenia jamsinoides (more commonly known as Common Gardenia or Cape Jasmine) can knock you out for the night as effectively as prescription sleeping pills without all the downsides, according to a new German study.

In tests, the fragrant flowers apparently acted on the the exact same neurotransmitter (GABA) that valium does. Here’s what that looks like: “In a Plexiglas cage whose air contained a high concentration of the fragrance, the mice ceased all activity and sat quietly in the corner.” That’s a fairly intense result for such a pretty plant!

Scientific evidence suggests that lavender may slow the activity of the nervous system, improve sleep quality, promote relaxation, and lift mood in people suffering from sleep disorders. Studies also suggest that massages with essential oils, particularly lavender, may result in improved sleep quality, more stable mood, better concentration, and reduced anxiety. In one recent study, people who received a massage with lavender felt less anxious and more positive than those who received the massage alone. Several small studies suggest that lavender aromatherapy may help reduce agitation in patients with dementia. Lavender flowers have also been approved in Germany as a tea for insomnia, restlessness, and nervous stomach irritations.

Its flowers are violet and are disposed in a circle, around a common axis; its opposite flowers, of a wooly-white shade shine silvery and give away a slightly bitter, aromatic scent. The sage tea fortifies the organism, protects you against seizures and it has a favorable effects in paralysis. It is administered in spasms, conditions of the spinal cord. The sage tea is used against insomnia, in combination with other plant teas.

Probably the best part about plant therapy is not only will having plants in your room help you to sleep better, but they will also have your room looking and smelling beautiful!
