Study Finds Drinking Tart Cherry Juice Helps Adults with Insomnia Sleep Better

We recently reported about a study touting kiwi as a possible natural sleep enhancer. Now, a recent study conducted by researchers at Louisiana State University indicates that a ritual of drinking tart cherry juice in the morning and at night can help you sleep better throughout the night.

According to researchers, drinking Montmorency tart cherry juice twice daily for two weeks helped to increase the amount of sleep older adults suffering from insomnia were able to get by almost 90 minutes.

The findings were revealed during the annual meeting of the American Society of Nutrition in San Diego.

According to the National Sleep Foundation, this news is significant as more than 40 million Americans suffer from insomnia. Many of them could find some degree of relief by developing a simple habit of drinking tart cherry juice in the morning and at night.

How much cherry juice does it take to do the trick?

Study participants drank eight ounces in the morning and at night for a total of 16 ounces each day for a total of two weeks.

Sleep Foundation reports that while the effects of drinking cherry juice aren’t as high as some behavioral therapies for reducing insomnia, it is definitely more effective than relying on the human body to produce an adequate amount of melatonin among adults already suffering from insomnia. (Though there are ways to boost your melatonin naturally.)

What should you take home from this?

As insomnia is a condition that impacts 23 to 34 percent of people aged 65 and older, this news presents an excellent, natural alternative to prescription medications and over-the-counter sleep aids commonly used to grab those elusive winks at night.

Drinking tart cherry juice twice daily is a small thing you can do to relieve insomnia symptoms. More importantly, you can enjoy it without side effects and interactions other medications might provide unless you’re on fluid restrictions or taking the rare medication that has interaction issues with cherry juice.

Among elderly patients suffering from insomnia, prescription medications may be effective, but present additional risks worth avoiding, such as falling, which it quadruples the risks of, according to the Daily Mail. And falling can lead to broken bones and even death.

Why is insomnia such a concern?

In addition to quality of life and constant drowsiness issues, chronic insomnia is believed to contribute to a wide range of other health conditions. The following included among them:

  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Chronic pain
  • High blood pressure
  • Declining cognitive function
  • Dementia

It may sound like the weight of the world being heaped upon a simple glass of juice. However, the benefits of drinking tart cherry juice go far beyond a little extra sleep. It’s also chock-full of antioxidants. If you’re one of the many adults suffering from insomnia, drinking tart cherry juice is a great first step to take towards a better night’s sleep.
