It seems like everyday you turn on the TV or flip through a magazine, there’s some new form of technology coming out to improve our lives in some way or another. I recently found out about “Wicking Sheets” which are designed to cool you down at night. While it may seem like a strange concept, keeping cool at night is one of the best ways to get a great night of sleep. I was interested to learn more about these so called cooling sheets and found out some really cool things about them.
While wicking sheets may be a fairly new concept, wicking technology is not. You may not know it by its name, but the Under Armour brand has used wicking technology in its famous performance sports wear for over 16 years now. The purpose of wicking is to drive moisture away from the body. Wicking technology led to the success of the Under Armour brand and now this same technology can be used in your bedroom.
Dr. Oz did a whole segment on his show detailing what causes night sweats. He said that your brain is the organ that is responsible for night sweats. The Hypothalamus portion of your brain is charged with regulating your temperature by sending messages to your Pituitary Gland. However, the Hypothalamus is dependent on Estrogen and so, if your estrogen levels are fluctuating, your brain does not know if you are too hot or too cold. If the Hypothalamus does not “tell” the Pituitary Gland that you are too hot or too cold, the body does not adjust in the way that it should. One of the many solutions he cited for night sweats were wicking sheets. The sheets not only helped with night sweats but also really helped with hot flashes at night. The wicking sheets actually sucked the moisture off of the person’s body and helped to dry them off quickly. Fear not, the wicking sheets dry off fast so that you never have to worry about sleeping on wet or damp sheets for the rest of the night.
