A Look at the Increased Use of Sleeping Pills

In National Use of Prescription Medications for Insomnia, appearing in Volume 37, Issue 02 of the journal SLEEP, Harvard Medical School reports that approximately 3.5 percent (nearly six million) U.S. adults admitted to the use of sleeping pills within a one-month period of time. The study, conducted for the years 2009 and 2010, showed an increase over a similar study conducted in 1999-2000 which reported only 2 percent of adults.

It doesn’t take long going without sleep to understand just how much the human body needs it. Getting the right amount of sleep for your stage in life, however, can be problematic. That’s why sleep schedules are so important. They help train the body to expect sleep at certain times of the day and to be awake at other times during the day.

There’s been a debate for centuries about whether or not sleeping with a clear conscience makes for a better night’s sleep. It’s even a recurring theme in Shakespeare’s Macbeth who felt as though when he murdered the King in his sleep that he actually murdered sleep. Although there are plenty of theories on sleeping with a clear conscience, there haven’t been any definitive studies done to lend weight to the ages old theory regarding conscience and sleep.
