Best Plants for the Bedroom

Plants are an excellent way to truly “go green” in your bedroom. They help improve indoor air quality and bring a little bit of Mother Nature’s splendor into your bedroom. The following plants are perfect to add a hint of green without dominating the landscape of your private sanctuary.

Lavender

This aromatic plant has a nice calming fragrance that promotes relaxation and sleep. The University of Maryland Medical Center gives lavender credit for improving sleep quality, promoting relaxation, and lifting mood among people who suffer from sleep disorders. Other calming plants along this line you may want to consider include jasmine, orchids, geraniums, and rosemary.

Snake Plant

Whether or not you believe you can sleep easy with something named after a snake in your bedroom is up to you, but the snake plant is highly recommended for converting carbon dioxide into breathable oxygen at night. The other benefit of having this plant in the bedroom is doesn’t require a lot of TLC to coax along. These plants require very little light or water to survive, making them a great choice for indoor use.

Rubber Trees

These small trees are quite good at clearing the air inside your home. More importantly, they thrive in cool, low-light climates that are often found in bedrooms. The plants themselves are easy to grow and maintain, so they work for people with thumbs that aren’t exactly green. This tree can grow up to eight feet tall and as much as four feet wide. Give the soil an opportunity to dry out between watering. Did you know that natural latex is made from sap of the rubber tree (Hevea brasiliensis)?

Peace Lily

If you’re looking for something a little more exotic or tropical in nature, consider bringing the lovely Peace Lilly into your bedroom. This beautiful plant is surprisingly easy to grow — especially if you tend to err on the side of too much water for plants rather than too little. The plants can grow up to four feet tall and wide, so make sure you have plenty of space. It’s a great choice for bedrooms because it reduces the levels of many toxins commonly found in the air.

Parlor Palm

Another plant to bring a bit of a tropical feel into the bedroom, the parlor palm, can grow well with indirect light (though it prefers a spot in the sun). This is a plant that requires a little more care than some of the other bedroom plants mentioned. But it adds a touch of romance that’s hard to overlook. The plant grows up to eight feet tall and three feet wide.

Any of these plants makes a fine addition to your bedroom in beauty and in functionality. Bringing a little green into your bedroom is not only a beautiful touch to add, but also one that is highly functional for creating better air quality and improving mood and health.
