5 Ways to Reduce Your Carbon Footprint

Chances are good that you want to do your part to help save the planet. If everyone begins taking small steps today to reduce their own carbon footprints, the amount of good it will do for the planet is amazing. These are a few simple ways you can reduce your carbon footprint for the good of Mother Earth.

1) Drink Tap Water

It sounds so simple and yet so few people do it. According to a New York Times article, making the switch to tap water for the recommended eight glasses each day can save you money, up to $1,400 per year compared to about 50 cents to consume the same amount from the tap.

This small switch does even more for the planet. You see, the article mentioned above goes on to report that the bottles of water Americans consume each year require 1.5 million barrels of oil to make. That’s enough oil to fuel 100,000 cars for a year instead. Then, only about 23 percent of those bottles are recycled.

2) Switch to Energy Efficient Appliances

Choose appliances for your home that have Energy Star labels. Energy Star products have superior energy efficiency over traditional appliances. From heating and cooling to laundry and kitchen appliances there are a wide range of Energy Star appliances to meet your needs.

3) Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

Sometimes it’s all about going back to the basics when it comes to reducing your carbon footprint. Reduce the number of products you use, the packaging they come in, and the waste you produce. Reuse products whenever possible. It can be fun to find new ways to use old products. This makes them last longer and keeps them out of landfills. Finally, recycle products that are no longer useful to you. Whether that means sending clothing to local charities, or cans and bottles to recycling centers, recycling is a great way to lower your impact on the planet.

4) Sleep on a Natural Latex Mattress

Natural latex mattresses are built to last 25 years or longer. They are made from the sap of rubber trees, which grow abundantly in nature, and they offer no emissions or off-gassing. Finally, at the end of their usefulness, natural latex mattresses are 100 percent recyclable. That’s why they are considered a “green mattress” choice.

Traditional mattresses and box springs cannot make that claim. Why does this matter? The Seattle Times reports that more than 300 old mattresses and box springs arrive in local landfills on any given day. The problem is that they don’t go away. They take up a lot of space, and they are difficult to recycle.

5) Change up Your Laundry Routine

Switching from hot water to cold water for laundry can save some serious green when it comes to electric bills and also uses less energy because you’re not heating water for every load you wash. Additionally, hanging your clothes to line dry whenever possible further reduces the carbon impact of your laundry habits. While this may not be possible year round, even doing so for part of the year can significantly reduce your planetary impact.

When you combine the impact of all these changes on the planet and on your budget, the savings are spectacular. Start making changes today, and see how quickly the benefits add up for you and your family.
