International Earth Day – March 20th

International Earth Day corresponds with the Vernal Equinox, which falls on March 20th. On the Vernal Equinox, night and day are the same length everywhere on the planet.

The thought behind this date for International Earth Day is that it is a time of equilibrium in which people can put aside geographical and political differences, and recognized the common need for all to preserve the planet’s resources.

Earth Day History

International Earth Day on March 20, should not be confused with the U.S. observation of Earth Day. The United States, and an increasing number of other nations around the world, celebrates Earth Day on April 22. The reason for this is more traditional in nature as U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson in concert with then Harvard University student, Denis Hayes, established a nationwide “teach-in” about the environment in 1970.

The purpose of both days (International Earth Day and Earth Day)  is to educate and inform the public about the Earth and things each and every person can do to help conserve resources in order to preserve the planet.

The United Nations established International Earth Day one year after the 1970 U.S. Earth Day celebration as an international celebration of the planet as well as a sort of international call-to-action to help safeguard the planet for future generations.

How Can You Celebrate International Earth Day?

As nations around the globe come together to celebrate the Earth and establish new ways of preserving the planet, it’s a good time for “we the people” to take stock of small changes we can make that will yield big results for making the earth more sustainable for future generations.

Make these small changes in your day-to-day life so your children and their children can enjoy many of the same luxuries we enjoy today.

  • Unplug electronic chargers when charging is finished.
  • Install skylights or tube lighting to conserve electricity in the daytime.
  • Install low flow showerheads and toilets.
  • Consider tankless water heaters.
  • Examine the benefits of solar power when possible.
  • Plant your own vegetables, greenery, and flowers.
  • Ride your bike to work, carpool, or utilize public transportation.
  • Switch to a natural latex mattress.
  • Use grey water for gardening.
  • Install rain barrels to collect rainwater for later use.
  • Turn your thermostat up two degrees in the winter and down two degrees in the summer.
  • Use earth-friendly paints (no or low voc paints), cleaning products, and materials around the house.
  • Use natural organic cotton fibers in your bedding, clothing, and window treatments.
  • Recycle.
  • Reduce.
  • Re-use.

Not only are many of these ideas great for the planet, but they also help you save money in the long run. For instance, natural latex mattresses as a green mattress choice may seem like a larger upfront investment. However, when you consider the fact that they are 100 percent recyclable and last three to four times longer than the average mattress, the investment doesn’t seem nearly as large — especially in light of the planetary benefits these mattresses provide.

Protecting the planet is a noble calling all citizens around the world should undertake. These are only a few of the things you can do to celebrate International Earth Day in your home.
