Once you’ve made the decision that a latex mattress is the right choice for you, your work isn’t finished. There are still other decisions to make. One of those decisions is whether you want your new mattress to be made with Dunlop latex or Talalay latex. Each one offers unique and very specific benefits.
Since 1929, the Dunlop method of making latex mattresses has been the standard method of construction. It is a natural process in which the sap from a rubber tree is tapped, then used to create a foam mixture which is poured into a mold and heated in an oven (a process called vulcanization).
Once the vulcanization is complete, the foam is moved and washed to remove any remaining residue. The process of creating Dunlop mattresses allows some of the foam to settle as it hardens, creating firm and supportive latex, which is ideally suited for mattress cores or for people who sleep on their backs.
Dunlop latex is well known for its firmness and unmatched support. You will not experience a sinking feeling that is common with memory foam mattresses or that may be associated with Talalay latex, synthetic foams, or latex blends.
If your primary concern, when looking for a mattress, is protecting the planet, either Talalay or Dunlop has much to offer. Dunlop, though, has a little more to offer, because the production method for manufacturing Dunlop latex mattresses is simpler and more energy efficient. Fewer ingredients and steps are involved, and less energy is used in the process. When you choose the right company for your mattress needs, like PlushBeds, you can be sure that you’re purchasing a mattress that is not only made with the highest standards of quality, but also made without exploiting the earth or the people who make your mattress.
The Talalay method of making latex mattresses adds two steps to the process after the mold is sealed. It is put into a vacuum chamber, where the air is extracted from the mold, before it is flash frozen, to avoid the settling that occurs in the Dunlop manufacturing method. After reaching the freezing temperature of 20 degrees below zero, the mold will then be heated to 200 degrees, in order to create the mattress.
Talalay latex is different from Dunlop latex in several ways. One of the most notable is that the open-cell structure of the talalay, allows air to flow freely through, increasing the breathability and coolness of your mattress since it is typically used as a top layer, closest to your body.
Another difference with Talalay latex is that it has more of a pillow-like, soft feel, that is ideal for top comfort layers in your mattress and for those who need a little extra cushioning for their pressure points. This prevents waking up stiff and sore in places that come into contact with the mattress like your shoulders, hips, and knees.
The best quality latex mattresses are made with both Dunlop and Talalay latex layers. Talalay latex is much less dense and softer than Dunlop latex – it is not supportive enough, on its own, to make a mattress. Some back or stomach sleepers may even experience a strong sinking sensation during the night on Talalay latex mattresses. Adding a good quality Dunlop latex core for support, can be the difference between years of long lasting support or unpleasant sagging indentations after a short period of time.
When you order your mattresses from PlushBeds, you can enjoy the outstanding, buoyant support of a Dunlop latex core, along with the soothing comfort and cushioned softness of a Talalay latex top comfort layer. The best quality latex mattresses offer this powerful combination of comfort and support, along with all the other benefits you have come to expect from natural latex mattresses, including luxurious comfort, pressure relief, long lifespan, natural resistance to dust mites, mildew and mold, motion isolating properties, and environmental benefits (no VOCs, no off-gassing, recyclable, etc.).
What sets PlushBeds latex mattresses apart? It is the PlushBeds commitment to adhere to the highest possible standards at every stage of the mattress-making process. From sourcing the rubber trees to manufacturing your mattresses and delivering them to you, PlushBeds is constantly seeking new ways to do better for you and for the planet.
The best part of the PlushBeds buying experience is that you can get a truly personalized mattress by adding to its firmness, softness or thickness, according to your needs (or those of your partner). In fact, you can choose to make one side of the bed firmer or softer to meet each of your needs for a better night’s sleep. It’s hard to top that in a mattress.
