Latex mattresses, unlike most other types of mattresses you purchase in retail mattress showrooms, come in layers. These layers are responsible for how firm or plush the latex mattress is.
The mattress core is the foundation of the latex mattress. This is the firm layer that provides support for the entire mattress. The core is almost always six-inches thick, and the ones with the best value are made using the Dunlop method of construction. The reason for this is simple. Dunlop latex is firmer, denser, and more durable and long lasting than mattresses made with all Talalay latex.
Talalay latex, on the other hand, is used for the plush, comfort layer of the mattress. This layer may be anywhere from two to four inches thick. Talalay latex foam is used for the comfort layers of the mattress partly because of their softness, but also as a result of their airiness and breathability. This pulls heat away from your body so you can sleep cooler.
Other benefits of the Talalay top layer is that it allows the mattress to cradle your pressure points while still providing an adequate amount of support for the entire body. This is a great solution for people with arthritis, fibromyalgia, shoulder pain, back pain and other medical conditions. The difference between nine-inch, ten-inch, and twelve-inch latex mattresses is the thickness of the Talalay layer. The Dunlop core is almost always the same six-inches thick.
As it is a matter of personal preference, neither the Dunlop or Talalay construction process is superior to the other because each method produces a mattress with distinctive features.
While some vendors/ retailers do offer mattresses that have more layers on top of the Dunlop core, it’s generally a waste. It may add more variability to the mattresses appearance, but it does little to adjust the firmness of the mattress that couldn’t be accomplished by removing the top layer and sending it back to the retailer for an exchange of firmness. That’s the genius of not gluing the layers together.
Of course, there are other reasons the layers shouldn’t be glued together.
1) Glues are often made with strong and potentially harmful petrochemicals. Since part of the draw to latex mattresses in the first place is the absence of chemicals, it would be a betrayal to add potentially toxic chemicals into the mix. Don’t forget the awful off gassing associated with industrial glue.
2) Diminishes the customizability of the mattress. The layers in latex mattresses really set them apart from other mattresses. That’s largely because they’re removable. You can remove the top layer and exchange it for a layer that has a different thickness if you need more plushness or less. You can even have separate firmness layers on each side of the bed if so desired to keep both partners happy. That’s why it is beneficial to purchase a latex mattress from a latex mattress manufacturer (versus a reseller) because you can get the exact customization you desire.
3) Latex is naturally abrasive. It grips. Using glue is an unnecessary step. The mattresses aren’t going to bunch, slip, or slide without the glue. Why add strong chemical-filled glues into the mix when they aren’t needed at all? 100% natural is a much better option.
No matter how your layers measure up, or how your body changes over the years, it’s a fairly simple matter to add new comfort layers or create a firmer mattress when the time arrives. With a twenty-year or longer lifespan, at some point your needs may change and purchasing a latex mattresses without glued layers from a latex manufacturer vs. a reseller gives you that option.
When your needs in a mattress change, you can simply remove the layer that’s too soft or request an additional layer for more plushness without sending in the entire mattress to be refit or forced to purchase an entire new mattress to accommodate your evolving needs. Who knew layers could be so useful?
