As you become more informed about the products you purchase for your home and your family, you’re going to hear a lot about various certifications available for products. While some certifications, such as in-house certifications, mean very little for consumers, other certifications carry more weight.
These “other” certifications include third-party certifications that require products to meet certain standards of quality, materials, and/or manufacturing. OEKO TEX Standard 100 Certification is one of those “other” third party certifications that should carry some weight in your purchasing decision – especially when buying something as intimate as a mattress.
The certification process for the OEKO TEX Certification is fairly thorough and includes testing for a long list of chemicals, pesticides, and phthalates in addition to common things like lead and arsenic. Items that are specifically banned in order to pass muster include the following.
OEKO TEX Standard 100 Certifications may be awarded to individual products or the things used to make the products (such as the fabric in clothing).
Products that have withstood the testing process and found to be absent of allergenic dyes, pesticides, chlorinated phenols, heavy metals, formaldehyde, chloro-organic carriers, and have a pH that’s not unkind to the skin, may be awarded the OEKO TEX Standard 100 Certification.
The OEKO TEX Standard 100 Certification is completely voluntary and must be updated each year in order to remain active. The certification process is conducted by independent laboratories that are not affiliated with the manufacturer of the items being tested.
It’s important to understand that this certification does not mean a product is organic. There are different standards and requirements for products to become certified organic. That doesn’t mean that items that are OEKO TEX Standard 100 Certified cannot also be certified organic.
Each certification provides new and different detail about the composition of the products and are important tools for consumers to use to evaluate the worth of a product, such as natural latex mattresses, for their homes and families.
What it means is that you can buy your PlushBeds memory foam mattress with confidence knowing that the latex foam support in your mattress is free of the harmful substances that make other memory foam products so unsafe for families. Your mattress is not harmful to expose to your family and delivers no unpleasant off-gassing.
The OEKO TEX Standard 100 Certification is a big deal and we’re proud to offer products worthy of this honor. We’re sure you’ll find it helps you sleep a little better at night and get the quality sleep that your body needs, knowing you made a wise purchasing decision, too.
