Organic Mattress

Are there toxins and chemicals lurking under your covers? Chances are, if you’re sleeping on a conventional mattress, there are. According to the Environmental Working Group, polybrominated diphenylethers (PBDEs), are found in a variety of everyday products used in the home, including mattresses.

“Long-term exposures to PBDEs may pose a human health risk, especially to infants and toddlers who are more likely to ingest household dust or acquire these chemicals through mother’s milk,” said Margarita Curras-Collazo, an associate professor of cell biology and neuroscience in an article for Science Today at the University of California.

This is actually stuff of nightmares, rather than pleasant dreams. For this reason and to decrease their environmental impact, people choose natural bedding, such as an organic mattress.

Why Purchase an Organic Mattress?

First and foremost, an organic mattress provides a healthier alternative to a traditional synthetic mattress.  Most conventional mattresses contain polyurethane, which is a petroleum-based substance that emits chemical fumes that can lead to symptoms of allergies, skin irritations, and respiratory problems, such as asthma. In addition to conventional synthetic mattresses, traditional pillows and blankets are often treated with other chemicals designed to repel wrinkles, water, and stains; they also may be dyed with synthetic dyes for color.

Further, one’s bed is the place where one’s body and mind is rejuvenated through sleep. When challenged by a an obstacle of a mattress that is chock-full of man-made synthetic materials, some of which may be potentially toxic, getting the type of rejuvenative quality sleep that you need may be more difficult. The benefits of sleeping on an organic mattress are plenty. Here are just a few:

Types of Organic Mattresses

There are three main types of environmentally friendly types of materials used in organic mattresses: natural latex, organic cotton, and organic wool.

“Whenever possible, use bedding made from organic cotton, wool and natural latex,” says sleep and dream specialist Rubin Naiman, Ph.D.

  • Natural Latex – Made from the sap collected for a year or longer from rubber trees, natural latex is chemical free, and is a renewable resource. An organic natural latex mattress is body conforming, making it denser than innerspring construction.
  • Organic Cotton – Grown and processed without the use of fungicides, herbicides, and insecticides, organic cotton mattresses can improve the indoor quality of air in your home because they don’t emit harmful chemicals.
  • Organic Wool – Organic wool wicks away moisture like a sponge and absorbs humidity, making for a dry sleeping experience. It also contains a natural substance, called lanolin which helps to prevent dust mites from settling inside the mattress. Organic wool is manufactured without the use of pesticides, unlike conventional wool manufacturing production, which uses chemicals in animal feed and pesticides in the pastures where animals roam.
