Keeping the Pets off Your Bed: Why Your Pooch and Your Pillows Shouldn’t Mix

To many of us, our dogs are considered part of the family. We take them on vacation, we buy them adorable clothes at Target, and we basically spoil them as we would our own children. But there’s one place that they simply don’t belong, and that’s our beds. While it’s hard to be immune to the literal puppy dog eyes they emit like kryptonite as they curl up on the down comforter and latex mattress, there have to be limits, and your bed should be one of them. Let’s talk about ways to keep the pets off your bed.

I have two dogs and while I love them both to pieces, I’d rather them not encroach on my personal sleeping space. When both of them were puppies, this case of the bed identity crisis was a real problem, but through research and understanding the animal psyche, we were able to reach a mutual level of respect for boundaries.

Let Them Down Easy

Try to make your pet understand, “it’s not you, it’s my bed.”  Following the advice I found on DogProblems.com, we gave my golden retriever a scrap of one of our old blankets and put it in her pet bed so that she had our scent with her when she slept. While she may still sit next to my bed longingly, her sense of law and order outweighs her desire to jump on.

Respect Your Dog’s Bed Too

Hopefully you keep your bed clean and tidy, so doesn’t your dog deserve the same respect as well? Make sure they’re sleeping in a clean and comfortable space that gives them enough room to dream peacefully. Just as you awake achy and cranky after a night on the pull-out,  your dog will be feeling lousy if his or her bed is too small.

Keep Them at an Arm’s Length

…Literally.  If you have a dog that follows you around all day, then make sure he or she still knows that you appreciate the bond you have, you just want to keep that bond out of your bed. Try placing their bed in your room next to your own. This will prevent them from feeling punished. Dog Whisperer extraordinaire, Cesar Millan has some great tips on making sure you both get a great night’s rest.

No Exceptions

As hard as it may be, try not to make too many exceptions for the bed rule.  Just like a child needs a routine, so does a dog. According to GoodHousekeeping.com, breaking a routine for a dog can be confusing. My Cocker Spaniel is terrified of thunderstorms, and while keeping him off my bed during the downpours can often be heartbreaking, in the long run, it’s the right thing to do. Make sure you still show them the love and affection they are used to getting, just do it on the floor, not on your bed.

You’re Cute, but You’re Still a Dog

Would you let a person who just drank out of your toilet bowl into your bed? I didn’t think so. As precious as your pups are, they still carry germs and ticks that you do not want crawling on your Egyptian cotton sheets. For sanitary purposes (and perhaps the sake of your own sanity) it’s better to keep Fido off the futon.
