According to the National Health Institute, more than 60 million Americans a year suffer from insomnia and sleeping disorders for extended periods of time. Insomnia tends to increase with age and affects about 40 percent of women and 30 percent of men. It is often the major disabling symptom of an underlying medical disorder. With this many people affected by sleeping disorders in our country, it’s easy to understand why sleeping pills seem to be prescribed so often. While prescription pills may be necessary for extreme insomnia and sleeping disorder cases, some mild cases can be treated with natural remedies, allowing you to sleep peacefully without that artificial foggy sleep that often comes as a down-side of pills. Here are some some natural solutions to help you sleep through the night.
One of the most popular natural pills right now is the “fad” of melatonin pills. Melatonin is a hormone produced in the center of your brain that helps to regulate the body’s circadian rhythms. Circadian rhythms are daily rhythms such as your sleep-wake cycle, which is highest at bed time. Taking a small dose of melatonin to increase your natural levels of the hormone can make it easier to fall asleep at night. While some people still feel the effects of artificial sleep when taking it, others disagree, finding that it eases them into a peaceful sleep.
Another natural sleeping aid is Valerian, which is an herbal extract. Not only does it help with insomnia, but it also helps to manage anxiety. One of the biggest advantages of Valerian is the absence of grogginess that users feel in the morning. When taking Valerian, you need to give it more than a night or two before you can expect to experience its effects. It may take a week or more to see the true value of Valerian.
Perhaps one of the safest and most well-known natural sleeping aids is chamomile. The popular herb most commonly found in tea has been used for hundreds of years. Its natural ability to put a person at ease makes it much easier to fall asleep with a clear mind and body. My favorite brand is Sleepytime Herbal Tea Chamomile.
Lemon balm is a lemon-scented mint leaf that has been known to help insomnia for years. Besides assisting in sleep, lemon balm also helps to calm a person down and helps with digestion. Lemon balm tea is the most common form of the herb. If you feel that chamomile tea is too bitter for your taste, try lemon balm instead.
The best way to find the natural sleeping aid that’s right for you is to introduce them into your sleeping routine slowly and try to really observe your sleeping habits. Just as keeping a food journal helps with dieting, keeping a sleep journal can help you to figure out your routines. Make sure to avoid mixing and matching sleeping aids and give the aids more than one chance before calling it quits. Until next time, sleep well, naturally!
