How to Sleep Better as a Couple

Getting a good night’s sleep, night after night, is important for your health and for the sake of your romantic relationship. Getting that sleep as a couple, however, can sometimes prove difficult.

Two people enter into relationships with different histories and expectations about the future.

More importantly, they come into the relationship with a lifetime of sleep habits and preferences that may be put to the test as you learn to sleep together as a couple. However, couples sleeping together have been linked to better sleep quality and health, so learning how to sleep better as a couple has huge benefits.

These tips can help you get better sleep together and perhaps save you from a few unhappy mornings along the way.

Make Room for Your Partner

This isn’t all about not being a bed hog. Gone are the days when you could sleep in the middle of the bed or a diagonal line from one corner of the bed to the opposite corner of the bed. You have to give your partner a little room in the bed too. If you find that the bed feels a little overcrowded with the two of you, perhaps it’s time to trade up to larger mattress sizes.

Sleep to Live Institute explains that couples who sleep on larger mattresses sleep better together. Keep that in mind as you make your selection, and purchase the biggest mattress for your budget and available space within your bedroom.

Choose Your Mattress Carefully

The mattress you choose matters more than the average couple realizes. You each have different preferences as far as support, firmness, etc. are concerned. Choose a mattress that represents a compromise for both of you, or find one that respects the preferences you both have when it comes to mattress firmness and support.

Mattress that offer zero motion transfer, like PlushBeds latex mattresses are great for couples who sleep in the same bed.  Also look for a mattress that offers adequate ventilation so that body heat isn’t trapped close to your bodies while you sleep.

Go to Bed at Separate Times

Staggering your bed times by as little as fifteen minutes, with the partner who has the most trouble falling asleep or remaining asleep going to bed first is another wise decision, according to The Nest.

This simple step helps the partner who has trouble sleeping fall asleep, or enter a more restful state, before the other partner comes to bed, helping you both enjoy a better night’s sleep.

Keep Sleeping Together

While this step is more beneficial for men, who have a tendency to sleep better when sleeping with a partner, it is also beneficial to the relationship as a whole as you grow more comfortable being casually intimate with one another. A recent ABC article suggests that humans are social creatures by nature, and perhaps that is why we prefer sleeping with a partner to sleeping alone – even though we experience more disturbances while sleeping with our partners.

Little changes can make a big difference when it comes to the quantity of sleep you get while sleeping together as well, as the quality of sleep. Try them today and see what a difference they make for the two of you.
