You’ve probably heard about the various silent signals you send through eye contact, or lack thereof, and body language. Did you also know that your favorite sleep position is revealing as well? Below are a few of the secrets you may reveal while you are sleeping.
Premier Inns, a hotel company in Ireland and the UK, conducted a study of 3,000 sleepers to determine that four sleep positions are most common and their interpretation (along with a body language expert) on what they mean.
There are other positions individuals sleep in, like the Soldier (on back with arms to the side) and the Starfish (on back with arms around pillow), but the following are the four most commonly cited in the study.
1) The Fetal Position. People who sleep in this position, which accounts for more than half of the people involved in the study, are shy and sensitive. They often seek approval and worry continuously. Some might even accuse people who sleep in the fetal position of overthinking tasks or being a little too meticulous.
2) The Log Position. Log sleepers accounted for the second most common sleep position, and are thought to be generally quite rigid in their routines and beliefs. Some might even call them stubborn. They also have a tendency to come across as bossy or aloof to some people. A consequence of sleeping this way — which is straight on the side with arms and legs straight and rigid too — is that people who sleep in this position often wake up feeling stiffness, with aches and pains, particularly in their pressure points.
3) The Yearner. If you sleep on your side with your arms stretched out in front, then you’re sleeping in the yearner position, which 25 percent of those in the survey indicated as their go-to sleep position. This position says you’re more likely to chase your dreams or look for new challenges; unfortunately, you’re less likely to have a plan for making them happen. Others may view you as a someone who wastes a lot of time as a result.
4) Free Fall Sleepers. The free fall position is face down on your stomach with arms and legs outstretched. Some people believe this indicates a struggle for space or control in sleep that is lacking in your daily life. You tend to get less restful sleep in this position than in others.
The Premier Inn study also revealed that where you sleep on the mattress is also revealing. For instance, people who sleep on the left side of the mattress, generally have a brighter, more optimistic outlook than those who sleep on the right side of the mattress.
While the position you sleep in may have an impact on your personality, it is not nearly as important as the mattress upon which you sleep. A Duke University sleep study of more than 16,000 people revealed your mattress is critically important for the quality of sleep you get. You need a medium-firm to firm mattress in order to provide adequate support for your body and spine as you sleep. Keep these things in mind as you prepare for an excellent night’s sleep.
