If you’ve even laid awake at night tossing, turning, and counting sheep, you’ll have been desperate for some sort of revelation or cure to bring you a good night’s sleep. It’s true that some people can sleep through anything. However, when you live in a noisy area, or if you’re a shift worker trying to sleep during the day in a full house, you’ll be aware of just how difficult getting to sleep is, even when you’re exhausted.

Sound is one of the 5 senses that impact sleep. And chances are you’ve heard of white noise. What you may not understand, though, is what it has to do with getting a good night’s sleep. If you’re like so many Americans who struggle to get an adequate amount of sleep night after night, you can surely appreciate the need for any edge you can get when it comes to not only falling asleep, but also to remaining asleep at night. White noise can help with that.

Is Sleeping with Earplugs Dangerous?

Is a snoring spouse, barking dogs, traffic outside, or birds chirping at 4 am playing havoc on your ability to get a good night’s sleep? If so, you’re far from alone. “The research is pretty solid that noise can prevent people from getting a good night’s sleep,” says Ken Hume, a principal lecturer in human physiology at the Manchester Metropolitan University in England. What’s more, noises as quiet as 40 decibels – akin to the sounds between a quiet whisper from six feet and a normal conversation at three feet – can keep us from sleeping, reports the National Sleep Foundation.

Sounds to Sleep To

Sleep is a precious commodity in many households around the world. For some people, it’s falling asleep in the first place. For others, it’s managing to remain asleep that’s the problem. One of the more common causes of problem sleeping is distractions brought on by noise in the environment. That’s why many people are beginning to take matters into their own hands in order to find sounds they sleep to so that they can ignore the sounds that tend to wake them up or keep them up at night.

What Sounds Distract from Restful Sleep?

Knowing how important it is to get a good night’s sleep only seems to pile on the pressure some nights when your brain is hijacked by every random noise of stray thought that crosses paths with it. Some of the sounds that may be preventing you from getting the sleep you so desperately need include:

  • Barking dogs
  • Dripping water faucets
  • Traffic
  • Trains
  • Garbage trucks
  • Street sweepers
  • Sirens
  • Noisy Neighbors

Of course there are plenty more sounds that might be making a difference in your own little corner of the world, but these noises are some of the most commonly complained about.
