7 Ways to Reduce Allergens in Your Bedroom

It’s that time of year. Trees are starting to turn green once again. Flowers are beginning to bloom. And everything seems to be covered in a bright yellow sticky powder. Pollen. It gets to the best of us, and does a real number on our sinus cavities.
Did you know, though, that the things inside your bedroom on any given day are just as allergy-inducing as pollen (and may even include a hint of pollen)? Fear not, though, the seven steps below can help you kick the allergens out of your bedroom so you can rest easy once more, without the painful throbbing of allergy-related sinus pressure.
1) Keep pets out. Your dog may be man’s best friend, but he tracks all manner of pet dander, dust, debris, dust mites, mold spores, and even pollen into your bedroom. Give him a room of his own and keep him out of yours. You’ll both rest easier as a result.
2) Vacuum and dust daily. It might be worth your while to invest in a robotic vacuum cleaner that automatically vacuums your bedroom each day so you don’t have to worry about forgetting. Also consider using electrostatic dusting cloths so that you’re not just throwing dust, mold, and dander into the air.
3) Clear out the clutter in your bedroom. If you suffer from allergies, it’s a good idea to remove as many items from your bedroom as possible. You want to get the clutter to the bare minimum. The fewer items in your room, the fewer items that can collect dust, become moldy, and/or trigger your allergies. In addition, an uncluttered bedroom improves a bedroom’s Feng Shui.
4) Buy a natural latex mattress. Among the benefits, Pure, organic natural latex mattresses are hypoallergenic, antimicrobial, anti-bacterial, and dust-mite resistant. It’s an excellent choice for the average allergy sufferer. If you’re still concerned about allergens, vacuum the mattress twice a year to remove any dust that may collect within the mattress.
5) Wash sheets weekly. Get more mileage from your weekly washing by using water temperatures of at least 140 degrees in order to kill all dust mites and their eggs. Dry the bedding in a hot dryer as well.
6) Get rid of heavy drapes and blinds. These become havens for dust to gather and remain, often unseen, in your bedroom. More importantly, get rid of them if they prove difficult to clean or need to be dry cleaned. Choose lighter window coverings that can be washed by hand or in the washing machine.
7) Keep your cool. While you’re at it, keep your bedroom cool too. Dust mites have a hard time reproducing in temperatures that are below 77 degrees. Keep your room cooler than this throughout the day and night in order to make your room a hostile environment for these microscopic creatures.
Little steps, like learning how to sleep better with spring allergies, can make a world of difference for your health. The key is to take these positive steps and behaviors and turn them into habits for a healthier life today and in the future.
