Simple Energy Savings Methods for the Home

Energy is the foundation of life as we know it, and our ability to control it has made our lives easier than many people believed would be possible. Just think about how easy it is to heat up a house, light up thousands of square feet of office space, or travel around the world in less than a day.
All of these are possible thanks to energy. Unfortunately, we’re not as good at regulating our use of energy as those examples suggest. In fact, as reported by the Energy Resource Center, we might be wasting two-thirds or more of all the energy we use. That’s a staggering amount of waste. Imagine, for a moment, if your washing machine used three times as much water as necessary, or your car used three times as much gas. Nobody would tolerate a machine that did that unless they had no other choice, but for some reason, we accept that kind of waste when it comes to energy.
The problem here is that most of our energy waste isn’t particularly obvious. We don’t really notice the heat coming off of light bulbs, the electronics still drawing power when we think they’re off, or the cracks in ceilings that let a lot of warmth escape. The issue isn’t that a few items are horribly inefficient – it’s that many of the things around us are just inefficient enough to create incredible amounts of waste when they’re all added together.
Fortunately, the nature of this problem tells us how to solve it. We can’t do just one or two things if we’re seriously trying to stop energy waste – that’s like sealing a crack in a sinking boat while ignoring all the other holes in it. Fixing this problem requires addressing energy waste everywhere it occurs, so here are fifty ways to save energy in your home.
If you’d like to find even more ways to save energy, here’s a list of a hundred tips to go with the fifty above. All of this may sound challenging to do at first, but once saving energy becomes a habit, it’s easy to keep going… and it does make a difference.
