According to the American Chiropractic Association (ACA), back pain is more than a moderate problem with more than 31 million Americans experiencing pain in their lower backs at any given point in time. Half of all Americans who work admit to having symptoms of back pain every year, the ACA further reports.
Chiropractic adjustments involve manually manipulating the spine in order to treat a variety of conditions, including lower back pain. How important are chiropractic adjustments, though, in light of such overwhelming numbers?
Who is a Candidate for Chiropractic Adjustments?
Most adults suffering from lower back pain are good candidates for chiropractic adjustments. It’s also an excellent choice to consider for treating headaches. The ACA states that 95 percent of headaches are primary headaches, meaning the headache itself is the primary problem.
These primary headaches include tension, migraine, or cluster headaches. Many of these headaches are associated with muscle tension in the neck, which may be remedied with a chiropractic adjustment.
The University of Maryland Medical Center also indicates that chiropractic care is instrumental in treating other conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome, otitis media (ear infection), sports injuries, neck pain, and more.
You should not seek chiropractic adjustments, however, if you suffer from severe osteoporosis, have cancer in your spine, are at an increased risk of stroke, have an unstable spine, or experience numbness, tingling, or loss of strength in an arm or leg per the Mayo Clinic. WebMD further discourages spinal manipulation among people with spinal cord compression, inflammatory arthritis, or who are taking blood-thinning medications.
Why Consider Chiropractic Adjustments?
Chiropractic care is not always the first choice many people consider when struggling with back pain or other conditions it treats effectively. However, some people are more willing to consider it as new awareness is raised about the dangers and risks associated with pharmaceutical treatments.
Many people turn to chiropractic adjustments as a holistic or chemical-free option for treating and/or managing their pain and medical conditions. Others turn to chiropractic care because they’ve heard how effective it is for treating pain in people they know and respect.
The bottom line is that you must decide whether or not it’s a good choice for you based on the level of pain you’re experiencing, the quality of life it’s robbing you of, and how much you want to reclaim control of your body and the pain that’s been ruling it.
What are the Benefits of Chiropractic Adjustments?
WebMD lists many benefits the 22 million Americans who turn to chiropractic treatment for relief each year receive. Among those benefits, pain relief is the number one benefit. Chiropractic adjustments provide a relatively safe (all medical procedures have risks), effective treatment for low back pain, neck pain, and headaches.
Anyone looking for options to spinal surgery or strong medications to manage pain, however, has little to lose and much to gain by turning to chiropractic adjustments as an alternative. Prevention, however, is always the best cure when it comes to low back pain.
For this purpose, the ACA recommends sleeping on a medium firm mattress, which reduces back pain by minimizing the curve in your spine and keeping it aligned while you sleep. A natural latex mattress fits the bill perfectly, providing yet another natural option for pain relief. A natural latex mattress can be one of the best mattresses for aches and pains and one of the best mattresses for back pain specifically.
