This Innovative Non-Toxic Mattress Changed the Way I Sleep - PlushBeds

Ahh.... I finally got a restful night's sleep. LAURA KLEIN AUG 23, 2019

We put so much thought into the food we eat, the water we drink, and the cosmetics we put on our skin – but what about the beds in which we spend a third of our lives?

Choosing your bed can be the choice between a healthful, restorative sleep and a source of a host of health woes. Many conventional mattresses are produced with dangerous chemicals like formaldehyde, which has been linked to health issues including asthma, allergies, and cancer. Other common mattress contaminants include cotton pesticides, polyurethane foam, and carcinogenic benzene.

PlushBeds is different. This non-toxic mattress manufacturer specializes in organic latex mattresses, handcrafted in California and customized to each individual purchaser to suit his or her sleeping style. Ethically and sustainably produced, these mattresses are not just better for your health; they’re better for the planet’s health, too.

That’s why when Plush Beds reached out to me and inquired about giving one of their non-toxic mattresses a test run, I couldn’t turn them down. After all, who wouldn’t want to experience an organic latex mattress that’s free from toxins and chemicals found in traditional mattresses? In fact, if you’ve ever experienced the strong chemical odor of new memory foam mattresses that wafts through the air after unwrapping it at home (and lingers for weeks or even months), you know what I’m talking about.

My Experience with a Non-Toxic Mattress

When the bed was delivered, I was surprised to be greeted by the two men who actually made the bed. Since when have you ever met the hands behind the bed you’re going to sleep on? They carefully unwrapped the mattress, assembled the bed and put on the organic cotton mattress cover, which is ridiculously soft. Silky soft. I don’t think I’ve felt a mattress cover this soft. And it’s gorgeous, too.

The bed was custom built to my specifications: I'm a back and side sleeper and asked for medium firmness (I could have had one side of the bed firmer than the other, perfect for couples who like different firmness in a bed). I was so thrilled to get rid of the dip that had developed in my old bed, and that night, I eagerly tested it out for the first time.

I felt like I was sleeping on a puffy cloud that gently envelopes you, giving you a delicate hug while providing enough firmness to support your body without creating any sore spots. The next day I awoke without the daily back discomfort from sleeping on a worn-out mattress.

PlushBeds Answers 7 Burning Questions About Natural and Organic Latex Mattress

But you don’t need to take my word for it! PlushBeds was happy to answer some of our burning questions about what makes their non-toxic mattresses so special.

Organic Authority: Why is it so important to opt for an organic, eco-conscious mattress?

PlushBeds: When you consider that you will spend 3 of the next 10 years of your life lying on your mattress, it only makes sense to invest in the healthiest mattress you can afford. PlushBeds organic latex mattresses are made with GOTS certified organic wool & organic cotton and GOLS certified organic latex and provide reassurance that your body is not exposed to any harmful pollutants or chemicals while sleeping.

OA: What makes your manufacturing processes so much more sustainable than that of other mattresses on the market today?

PB: Conventional mattresses are often manufactured with cost and speed as the primary drivers; not sustainability and the environment. Many of these mattresses are made with materials containing formaldehyde, chloroform, PBDE flame retardants, methylene chloride, and other chemicals that can be harmful over time. As a GOTS and GOLS certified organic manufacturer, sustainability at PlushBeds is a defining characteristic of how we do business each day and who we are.

OA: You hold quite a few eco-conscious certifications. Why was it important for you to pursue all of these distinct labels?

PB: When you’re shopping for a mattress, it’s important to understand the various mattress certifications, like GOLS, GOTS, OEKO-TEX, and GreenGuard Gold. That way, you can be sure of what you are purchasing and whether it is what it appears to be. To qualify as a GOLS and GOTS certified mattresses, the mattress must contain a minimum of 95 percent certified raw organic materials. The GREENGUARD Gold Certification standard requires low total VOC emissions levels to help ensure that products are beneficial for sensitive individuals such as children and the elderly. If the mattress carries the STANDARD 100 label, you can be certain that every component of this mattress has been tested for harmful substances and that it's harmless in human ecological terms.

OA: Why is a latex mattress a more environmentally conscious, sustainable choice for consumers?

PB: Latex mattresses are made from milky-white latex sap tapped from the Hevea Brasiliensis tree, which is grown without chemicals, fertilizers, or pesticides and harvested over the tree’s natural lifespan. Hevea Brasiliensis trees sustainably produce latex sap for 16 years on average. The production of organic latex used in building mattresses does not deplete this natural resource or harm the environment and supports long-term ecological balance. As one of the world's oldest and largest latex suppliers, ARPICO has decades of experience in producing premium quality latex and is one of the few latex suppliers in the world to own their own certified organic plantation of 5.5 million rubber trees. As America's largest distributor of ARPICO organic latex, PlushBeds brings the world's finest latex directly from ARPICO's certified organic plantations to your bedroom.

OA: Tell us a bit about sourcing: your beds are hand-crafted in California, and the organic wool comes from New Zealand. How did you make this choice? Where do the other materials for your mattresses come from?

PB: All of our mattresses are handmade by our skilled mattress craftsmen in our 80,000sf

GOTS and GOLS organic certified manufacturing plant in Camarillo, California. The GOTS certified organic wool in our mattresses was carefully selected through a rigorous vetting process and was selected based on its high quality and durability. In addition, we needed to ensure that our supplier's high standards for purity are followed and flocks are managed in a humane, chemical-free, and environmentally safe manner.

OA: Are there any specific care instructions to ensure that your mattresses stay as comfortable as possible for as long as possible?

PB: For starters, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. We recommend investing in an organic mattress protector to preserve the life of your new mattress. This can be removed and easily washed with your sheets. Some people buy 2 so they always have 1 in use while washing the other. This is an economical way to ensure that your mattress stays in a “like-new” condition while protecting it from dirt, stains, and spills. The protector is breathable and virtually undetectable beneath your sheets. Aside from this, vacuuming your mattress is a convenient way to clean it. It’s not too harsh and will help to remove debris and dust, as well as reduce allergens. Try to vacuum your mattress monthly if you can.

OA: How long does one of your mattresses last?

PB: Latex mattresses are some of the longest-lasting mattresses available in the marketplace today. In fact, the longevity of latex mattresses is just one of the many benefits that set them apart from traditional innerspring mattresses. At PlushBeds, we’re so confident in the construction, durability, and longevity of our mattresses that we offer a 25-year warranty. When it comes time for a consumer to recycle their PlushBeds mattress they can feel confident that PlushBeds’ organic and natural latex mattresses are made with pure, biodegradable organic and natural materials that will not sit in a landfill for decades.
