What are Green Degree Programs and Majors? - PlushBeds

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported in March of 2013 that the year of 2011 saw 3.4 million jobs in the Green Goods and Services (GGS) industry. These jobs accounted for 2.6 percent of all employment within the U.S. These numbers are up from 3.1 million green goods and services jobs representing 2.4 percent of total employment in 2010. The largest leaps within the industry occurred in private sector employment, which jumped from 7 percentage points to 8.9.

This means that students interested in pursuing careers in fields that put the planet first have career options available to them.

More importantly, it shows that these opportunities are growing in number.

Schools Offering Environmental Degrees

Green degrees are growing in popularity. Five colleges currently comprise a unique system of learning called the Eco-League College Consortium. It is the only program of its kind in the United States and it is dedicated to educating students about environmental stewardship and social change in an effort to prepare them to enter the workforce in careers dedicated to creating a sustainable future for the planet. Here are the five that comprise The Eco League:

  • Alaska Pacific University (Alaska)
  • College of the Atlantic (Maine)
  • Green Mountain College (Vermont)
  • Northland College (Wisconsin)
  • Prescott College (Arizona)

The following colleges also offer impressive green degree programs for students as well:

Arizona State University University of Michigan at Ann Arbor
Cornell University Stanford University
Duke University University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign
Georgia Institute of Technology University of California, Berkeley
John Hopkins University Yale University
Middlebury College Carnegie Mellon University
Montana State University Massachusetts Institute of Technology
SUNY-ESF Syracuse

Note: there are many more Universities and Colleges throughout the United States offering majors that are green in nature, and many more are expanding course and degree options every day to include greener fields of study for students.

If you’re unsure if the college or university you’re interested in attending has a “green” degree that matches your interests, ask. If they don’t, find out why; perhaps you can become the voice of change for that university.

Green Degree Examples

Today’s environmental degree programs go well beyond farming, landscaping, and conservation. They include sensational and highly desirable degree programs such as the sample listings below:

Sustainability Certification

Some professionals are interested in finding new ways to solve sustainability issues in their careers and as a whole. While they may not be interested in returning to school full time, the sustainability certification gives them the option to take a 15 – 18 hour certification course as a supplement to the careers and education they already have. New students may find it provides inroads for entry-level positions in green industries.
